How I Can Help
Be it that you want to focus on a particular concern in your life, if you want to explore more areas than one, or if you wish to completely change how you view yourself and live with more long-term therapy, I can help with that with my collaborative approach focused on building a trusting therapeutic relationship adapted to your needs. I work in a person-centred way, meaning I am here to listen to you with openness and compassion. I am not here to tell you what to do, but for us to together figure out what you need and want, to achieve your goals and aspirations. Whatever you'd like to address in our work together will be approached gently and respectfully, as your experience matters and is unique to you. This will help us build a trusting and safe therapeutic relationship. My hope is that this will help you get to know and understand yourself better, starting a process of change that is unique to you and your therapy goals. I am an inclusive and socially conscious therapist. This has been shaped with my background and personal experiences, as well as my sociology and health psychology training. I am highly aware of intersectionality, or where people may belong to more than one marginalised group and how to navigate that with awareness in my work so that what I offer is actually helpful. I wish for everyone to experience a sense of being able to move forward in life despite socially imposed barriers, and I can help you work with this if this is relevant to your life. Finally, I am highly aware that many people cannot access therapy due to various socioeconomic barriers, also contributing to a range of issues which cannot be addressed solely with therapy. I integrate these aspects into my practice, providing not only therapeutic support, but also by, e.g., help with information of local services which may meet some of these needs.
Types of Therapy I Offer
In-person vs remote therapy I provide in-person and remote, including videocall and telephone therapy. My in-person sessions are in central Edinburgh locations (EH1 and EH10). You can choose your preferred mode of therapy. If you are not sure which type of therapy would be best for you, I am happy to help you with this at the consultation call. Short vs. long-term therapy I offer short- and long-term therapy, depending on your preference and need. The number of sessions is at your discretion, and is negotiated between us depending on your need. Most commonly, short-term therapy is between 4 to 8 weekly sessions, where we can explore a particular issue with more focused work compared to longer term therapy. Long-term therapy is usually 10 to 20 sessions, and is characterised by more in-depth work and ability to focus on various life areas or deeper and longer-term issues (especially when working with childhood experiences, unresolved past issues, trauma, being neurodiverse, mental and physical health conditions, and other deeply ingrained ways of being). We can discuss your wishes and needs for length of therapy at the consultation call. I also would review this with you throughout the therapy process to ensure you are getting the appropriate number of sessions.
Free Consultation Call & Starting Therapy
As indicated below, I offer the free 20 minute consultation video or telephone call. To arrange this, please fill out the contact form below, or call/text me to the number on the contact page. Here you are invited to indicate preference for either telephone or videocall consultation. At the consultation call, we would talk to see if we are a good fit, as well as assess your needs and wishes for therapy. This is where we would discuss and arrange session times, location, the therapy format (in-person or remote), and I would answer any other questions you might have. You can also ask me about concession rates in the call. If we decide to work together, I would provide you with a working contract. The contract would outline our arrangement and help start building our therapeutic relationship. We would then meet for our regular sessions (usually once per week, however can be different), which last 50 minutes. I would ask you for payment to be sent via bank transfer before the session (unless agreed otherwise). The first session would include deeper exploration of your reasons for coming to counselling, similar to our consultation call. I would also talk you through various details so we can start our work together with you fully informed. As stated before, I work collaboratively, and would check in with you on the regular basis to make sure therapy is helpful. This reviewing would help us plan for future sessions and give you a chance to voice any feedback you might have. If you have any further questions on the therapy process and especially the early stages when starting therapy, which can be daunting, I am here to answer those. Please do not hesitate to get in touch.
